Renault Presents its First Hydrogen Powered Prototype Car

Automotive NewsCar brands than ever are driving research and projects of vehicles using hydrogen or other fuel. Proof of this is the presentation of Renault Scenic ZEV H2, the first hydrogen vehicle of the French, a prototype based on the popular MPV Grand Scénic.

The system does not differ much from other cars with hydrogen fuel cell; an electric-drive system consists of an engine and a set of lithium-ion batteries, which are supplied through the production of electricity by fuel cell systems energy recovery in braking.
It has a hydrogen tank of 3.5 kg, which keeps a high pressure of 360 bars, which offered autonomy goes up to 350km.

The occupancy remains the same as the current model, and benefits are similar to those of a vehicle of equal weight and power: 90kW engine, a 120cv top speed of 160km / h, with acceleration 0-100km / h in 14, 65s and weighing 1850kg, some 300kg more than the current version.

The brand has reported that the development of this prototype cost only € 3.5 million and 14 months of development. A breakthrough, encouraged by the synergies from the Renault-Nissan alliance, which has resulted in a mutual transfer of technologies, starting with classic engines, joint platforms, and now this technology mainly developed by Nissan, and tested on the model Nissan X-Trail.

The Renault-Nissan alliance has set 2011 as the date for the start of production of such vehicles, hoping to solve the two problems for the marketing of the vehicle: the high cost of batteries, and the lack of stations of service for refueling hydrogen.
